    Automatic marking of Shell programs for students coursework assessment

    The number of students in any programming language course is usually large; more than 100 students is not uncommon in some universities. The member of staff teaching such a course has to mark, perhaps weekly, a very large number of program assignments. Manual marking and assessing is therefore an arduous task. The aim of this work is to describe a computer system for automatic marking and assessment of students' programs written in Unix Bourne Shell. In this study, a student's program will be assessed by testing its dynamic correctness and its maintainability. For dynamic correctness to be checked the program will be run against sets of input data supplied by the teacher, whereas for maintainability the student's program will be tested statically. The program text will be analysed, and its typographic style and its complexity measured. The typographic assessment in this system is adaptable to reflect the change of emphasis as a course progresses. This study presents the results generated from the assessment of a typical class of students in a Shell programming course. The experience with the development of the typographic assessment system has been generally positive. The results have shown that it is feasible to automate the assessment of this quality factor, as well as dynamic testing. Realistic grading can be achieved and useful information feedback can be obtained. The system is useful to both the students learning programming in Shell, (Arthur, L. J. and Burns, T., 1996) and the staff who are teaching the course. Although the work here is focused on the Bourne Shell, (Bourne, S. R., 1987) the study is still valid, with little or no change, to all other shells. The method used can also be applied, with some modification, to other programming languages. Furthermore this method is not limited to university and teaching, it can also be used in other fields for the purposes of software quality assessment

    The Relationship between Romantic Attachment and Coping Styles for Graduation Stress for College Seniors

    The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between graduation stress and attachment domains for college seniors. Two hundred and fifteen university students expecting to graduate in one or two academic semester participated to the study. Out of the participants 123 (57.2%) were female, 78 (36.3%) were male, the mean age of participants was 22.06. Participants answered the questions of Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire-Revised (ECR-R; Fraley, Waller and Brennan 350) and Coping Style Scale (Şahin and Durak 56) via web-based database application. The results showed that students having high level of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were less likely to have problem focused/effective coping styles, and more likely to have emotion focused/ineffective coping styles when they feel stress related to graduation. This study has provided a helpful resource not only to the researchers but also to the practitioners and experts providing psychological support to university students

    Effect of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine on ovarian reserve of women of reproductive age

    Objectives: To evaluate the effect of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines developed for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on the ovarian reserve of women of reproductive age. Material and methods: This prospective study was conducted between July and December 2022 in a tertiary care hospital affiliated with a university. A total of 117 patients were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups. The first group (n = 62) consisted of women of reproductive age who received two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine administered 21 days apart. The control group (n = 55) included women with the same demographic characteristics who did not plan to be vaccinated. Hormonal values and basal antral follicle count were compared between two groups. Results: The mean age of the study group was 26.3 ± 3.6 years, and the mean age of the control group was 25.4 ± 6.2 years (p = 0.332). In the vaccinated group, mean follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) on day 2 was 5.29 ± 2.28; luteinizing hormone (LH): 5.18 ± 1.3; E2: 46.43 ± 24.51; anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH): 4.17 ± 2.1; antral follicle count: 16.23 ± 8.04; right ovarian volume: 6.4 ± 1.7; left ovarian volume: 6.2 ± 2.1. FSH measured at D2 in the control group was 5.68 ± 1.89; LH: 5.22 ± 2.2; E2: 48.41 ± 27.12; AMH: 4.30 ± 1.74; number of antral follicles: 15.64 ± 9.04; right ovarian volume: 6.1 ± 1.8; left ovarian volume: 6.3 ± 1.4. There were no statistically significant differences for FSH, LH, E2, AMH, ovarian volume, and number of antral follicles on the second day of menstruation between the groups. Conclusions: According to the results of the present study, the mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccine does not affect the ovarian reserve of patients

    Seasonality of Tuberculosis in Tekirdağ City, 2007-2011

    AimIt is well known that the incidence of many respiratory infections shows seasonal variability. Unlike other respiratory infections, in many studies tuberculosis (TB) diagnoses increase in summer and the mechanism underlying this fluctuation remains unknown. We aimed to examine whether TB has an annual seasonal pattern in Tekirdağ.Materials and MethodsData were obtained from TB dispensaries in Tekirdağ retrospectively. There were 1311 cases of TB notified between January 2007 and December 2011. TB notifications show a seasonal pattern, with a peak in spring and summer, which is present in both pulmonary and extra pulmonary tuberculosis.ResultsTB notification was found highest in summer with the value of 28,4 %.ConclusionTB incidence in Tekirdağ showed seasonality like previous studies held in different countries. There is a need for large longitudinal studies to clarify the underlying mechanisms that may provide a better disease control

    AimThe incidence rate of tuberculosis (TB) is estimated by the World Health Organization as 128/100.000 worldwide. The main principles of TB control are early case detection and diagnosis, followed by directly observed treatment of patients. The aim of this study was to analyse the dynamics of TB between 2007 and 2011 in Tekirdağ.Material and MethodsData were obtained from TB dispensaries and separated into oneyear categories. Case notification rates were analysed by different age groups (0–14, 15–24, 25–44, 45–64, 65 and above). The patients were divided into two groups according to involved organs: pulmonary (smear/culture positive=PSP and smear/culture negative/unknown=PSN/U) and extrapulmonary. Antibiotic susceptibility tests to major antituberculosis drugs were performed on M. tuberculosis strains that were grown in culture and suspected of being resistant. Resistance to both INH and rifampicin were accepted as multiple drug resistance tuberculosis (MDR-TB).ResultsA total of 162.291 patients were examined, and out of this population, 1311 (0.8%) tuberculosis patients were evaluated. The distribution of case notification rates by year were 44.6%, 34.6%, 33.4%, 28.6%, and 27.6%from 2007 to 2011, respectively. Pulmonary and extrapulmonary TB rates were 74.5%(46.0%PSP and 28.5%PSN/U) and 25.5%, respectively. Extrapulmonary TB rates were 42.3% and 17.6% in men and women, respectively. Resistance rates against INH, rifampicin, ethambutol, and streptomycin were 21.6%, 8.8%, 1.6%, and 6.4%, respectively. The MDR-TB rate was 6.4%.ConclusionSystematic implementation of directly observed treatment programs plays an important role in decreasing TB incidence. Because the TB rates in our region are above the average for Turkey, screening and follow-up procedures must be conducted more stringently and regularly

    Target genes, variants, tissues and transcriptional pathways influencing human serum urate levels.

    Elevated serum urate levels cause gout and correlate with cardiometabolic diseases via poorly understood mechanisms. We performed a trans-ancestry genome-wide association study of serum urate in 457,690 individuals, identifying 183 loci (147 previously unknown) that improve the prediction of gout in an independent cohort of 334,880 individuals. Serum urate showed significant genetic correlations with many cardiometabolic traits, with genetic causality analyses supporting a substantial role for pleiotropy. Enrichment analysis, fine-mapping of urate-associated loci and colocalization with gene expression in 47 tissues implicated the kidney and liver as the main target organs and prioritized potentially causal genes and variants, including the transcriptional master regulators in the liver and kidney, HNF1A and HNF4A. Experimental validation showed that HNF4A transactivated the promoter of ABCG2, encoding a major urate transporter, in kidney cells, and that HNF4A p.Thr139Ile is a functional variant.
